McAfee Establishes Cybercrime Response Unit

Cybercrime busters McAfee have pulled off another first in their long fight against computer viruses: an online centre for victims.

Californian based McAfee is the world’s largest dedicated security technology company. It has introduced the first, dedicated cybercrime online centre in its continued fight against increasing hi-tech theft which has cost U.S. consumers nearly $8.5 billion over the last two years.

McAfee’s Cybercrime Response Unit is geared to help both consumers and small businesses. It is designed to quickly assess if they have been a victim and then advises them what steps they should take, including speaking to the police and financial institutions.

The Unit uses a forensic scanning tool which is based on McAfee’s Global Threat Intelligence package. This will initially test a user’s computer to see if they have been impregnated with malware. If the situation proves serious, the unit will telephone the computer user in question and discuss the options.

Created initially for U.S. consumers, the Cybercrime Response Unit follows consultation between leading computer security experts, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and WiredSafety.org.

Paul Kurtz, a former White House advisor and consultant on the Cybercrime Response Unit, said: “For about $30, cyber crooks anywhere in the world can buy a blank credit card, complete with holographic security markings used by legitimate credit card companies. Most of the time, consumers don’t even know they’ve been a victim of this type of crime until it’s too late. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated at targeting online users using stealth malware, creating a growing need for support centers like this.”

McAfee continues to warn computer users worldwide to be on their guard against attacks from viruses. Signs that they are a victim of the latest techniques, including the use of sophisticated malware and phishing strategies, include a slow-running computer, unexplained emails, a proliferation of pop-ups, or unexpected payments from their accounts.

The Californian cybercrime unit will help McAfee stay in the forefront of efforts to defeat what is a major global crime problem.
