Which Windows Version Am I Running?
First things first, you have to be sure you know which versions of Windows you are running.
Old hands will be able to recognise them from the graphics as they look at it and also, the opening ‘credits’ should tell you which version you are running.
We’re concerned with Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems (OS) here, but there have been a number of previous versions, examples of which are still happily operating today. They are Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows ME.
If you’re sitting there working on your computer, unsure if you’re working on XP, or Vista, or you want to know which version of those two OS you have, then there are a number of ways to find out.
But one of the quickest ways is to left-click on Start (usually bottom left of screen); left-click on Run (bottom right of box); type winver (windows version, get it?) into Open box; left-click Okay and up pops an About Windows box. This will give you what you want to know, including what version, what build and what security pack that’s installed.
