FBI Struck Down By Virus
Major U.S law enforcement agency the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been left a little red faced after a mysterious computer virus has penetrated its systems.
Media reports state that a particularly nasty cyber-virus effectively shut down their email ability and caused chaos in other parts of their operation. The reports say sources have confirmed that FBI agents were unable to send and receive emails, and that this hampered their ability to talk to other intelligence and law enforcement agencies for some days.
Their private server was down for a period, as the G-Men (as FBI agents are known), struggled to cope with one of their main communication methods failing. But it was not only the FBI that had a problem. The same, or similar virus also reeked havoc at the
U.S. Marshals office, which also had to shut down its systems, including email.
Further details about the type and origins of the virus have yet to be made public, but at one time, both law enforcement agencies had to cut links with the U.S. Department of Justice computers in order to try and stop the spread. It is thought that cyber security personnel, who have been making a clean sweep of the entire systems, have identified the virus and acted to correct the damage caused.
Officials at both agencies were keen to reassure those on the outside that no confidential information had been compromised and that the threat had been neutralised.
Various other media sources were not sure that the threat had gone away, citing examples of FBI offices throughout the U.S still being unable to use email.
